2 Personal values
Personal values are influences that guide how a nurse percieves a patient and their situation. My personal values include compassion, creativity, respect and confidence.
Compassion is the quality and ability to genuinely care for others. This is one of my core values because I take pride in my ability to provide emotional comfort through compassion, which is also one of the traits I look for in people during everyday life, especially during my times of need. This is applicable to nursing as to effectively assess patient situations and plan, administer, and evaluate appropriate nursing care a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship is a necessity. Compassion is a crucial component to building and maintaining trust, promoting communication and improving overall professional relationship with the patient.
Creativity is the ability to think critically and in abstract ways. Creativity is one of my values as I have come across numerous unconventional issues both in my life and my loved ones’ lives in which a tailored solution was needed to resolve the issue, showing the importance of creativity to allow this ability to create suitable solutions for these frequently-arising and unique problems found in all areas of life. In conjunction with nursing, creativity is a valuable trait as no patient and their situation are identical, meaning that each patient has their own unique needs, preferences and innumerable other characteristics, making it crucial to have a skill set to manage the unpredictable situations one may face as a nurse and treat them all with the same efficiency, effectiveness and general competency.
Respect is a consideration for one’s own and others’ individualistic abilities and worth. Respect is one of my values due to my own experiences regarding the impact of respect on social relationships, which are pivotal in maintaining individual holistic health and society as a whole. In nursing, interpersonal relationships are a considerable portion of the career, from nurse-patient relationships to collaborative relationships with other healthcare providers. Thus, ensuring respect is given and also received from the other party within these relationships is necessary for maintaining healthy and productive relationships with others, ensuring the system of healthcare runs smoothly, as well as it ensures that an individual as a nurse holds the ability to supply their unit with the proper competencies with proper personal health.
Confidence is the ability to feel secure in oneself. Confidence occupies one of my core values as I have experienced the significant impact of confidence in attaining and maintaining a growth mindset. A growth mindset is a perspective where intelligence is viewed as a quality that can be enhanced through effort and learning, and failure is viewed as a beneficial opportunity to learn. This connects to nursing as through the evidence of my experiences, confidence allows for successful and efficient learning. This fosters an optimistic and motivating approach to mistakes, which is of great use for nurses of all levels of experience as there are always opportunites to learn and improve in the profession. Furthermore, self-stability is essential as it promotes advocation when needed, ensuring the safety and well-being of the healthcare system by protecting patients, one’s self, and other healthcare workers.
