Smart Goals

These two smart goals were created with a focus on Winter 2025 semester.

1. Short Term Goal

Specific: I will improve my pharmacology knowledge to increase my confidence during spring 2025 clinical placements

Measurable: I will make sure to dedicate at least one hour a week to studying pharmacology from various sources.

Achievable: I will use materials such as university content from NURS 1550’s pharmacology lessons, Mosby’s drug guide, online platforms like tik tok or youtube, and while practicing as an RPN

Relevant: A strong understanding of pharmacology will increase patient safety rates and support my learning as a student transitioning to RN.

Time-Bound: I will achieve this goal by the beginning of winter 2025 semester (January 9th 2025), to be better prepared for spring 2025 clinical placement.

This goal is related to the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standard, Medication (2024), as evidenced by nurses needing to ensure that they have the knowledge, skill and judgement needed to perform medication practices safely (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2024).

2. Long-Term Goal

Specific: I will develop strong communication and leadership skills as a student by taking on more responsibilities in group work and academic activities during my BScN.

Measurable: I will be the group leader in 2 or more projects and contribute to class online discussions, seminars, or nursing student organizations by the end of Winter 2025 semester.

Achievable: I will seek help from classmates, professors, and student organizations to develop my leadership skills.

Relevant: Developing these skills are crucial to my development into an RN: working in healthcare involves a lot of communication with inter professional team members and taking on leadership roles when needed.

Time-Bound: I will achieve this goal by the end of Winter 2025 semester (April 4th 2025).

This goal is related to the College of Nurses of Ontario Entry–to-Practice Competencies (2019). Leadership is outlined as a fundamental skill for all nurses entering the profession. The code of conduct also sets out the same expectations revolving around leadership (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2019).
