Master of Arts Program
Elective Courses
In addition to the required Core Courses, MA students must also complete twelve units of electives (usually four one-semester courses). Not all the listed electives are offered every year. You can find the list of which courses are offered in the current year in the electives document on the current year on the program website.
The list of electives is divided into Fall and Winter semesters. You probably want to try to balance your courses so that you have two electives in Fall semester and two in Winter semester.
All graduate courses have restricted enrolment, which means that you need permission from the home department to register.
Note that there are two categories of approved electives listed for each semester. Preferred electives have seats reserved for GSJ students. This means that, once you contact the department listed on the electives document, they will grant you a seat in the course automatically as long as there are still seats available.
For Other Approved electives, each course has been pre-approved by the GSJ program to count towards the M.A. But because these courses are offered by other programs, they might not have space for GSJ students, and the instructor might require additional competencies so that they know you can succeed in the course. To request to enrol in one of these courses, contact the administrator listed in the electives document.

Hello, I’m a student in the MA program in Gender & Social Justice. My student number is #####. I’m interested in taking COURSE CODE in your department in FALL/WINTER semester. Are there seats available? If so, may I have permission to register in Mosaic?
If you find a course that is not on the pre-approved lists that you think is relevant to your studies, contact the Director to ask if the course can count as an elective. Electives should be relevant to the fields of Gender and Social Justice.
Other programs occasionally offer elective courses in the Spring/Summer term but these are rare!
