4 Fascia
Fascia:
If you have ever had to transport something valuable you might be inclined to wrap and protect it before transport. You may have a layer of cloth, then some bubble wrap before putting into a cardboard box. Similarly, the fascia is the tissue below the skin, which can also be divided into several different subtypes:
- Superficial fascia (subcutaneous tissue): the outermost layer beneath the skin contains variable amounts of fatty tissue
- Investing fascia (can be divided into superficial, intermediate and deep): covers the external aspects of muscular tissues
- Endoabdominal fascia: a membranous sheet lining the internal aspect of the abdominal wall before the peritoneum
Using what you just learned, try to identify the fascia on this specimen from the Bassett Collection (179-5).
