Chapter 6: Respiratory Anatomy

Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. The process of respiration is fundamental to our very existence, yet it is an aspect of human physiology that often goes unnoticed in our daily lives. This vital process underpins every breath we take, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, which is essential for sustaining life.

The act of breathing involves the interplay of several actions. These actions are achieved through key structures from the nasal passages, trachea, and bronchial tubes, to the alveoli, diaphragm, and intercostal muscles, the collaborative effort of these components ensures the efficient delivery of oxygen to our cells and removal of carbon dioxide from our bodies. Let’s discuss these structures, and please, don’t hold your breath!

Learning Goals

  • Understand structural landmarks of the nasal skull
  • Identify the pharynx and larynx
  • Identify the trachea and understand the nomenclature of the bronchi
  • Recognize the alveoli and their cellular composition
  • Identify the diaphragm and understand its role in respiration
