Appendices (2.14)
Appendices (2.14)
Appendices are used to include material that supplements the content of an essay or assignment, but that would be distracting or inappropriate in the main body text. There are specific formatting requirements for appendices, which can be found in Chapter 2 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (the Publication Manual):
- Appendices are only included if the information helps the reader to understand, evaluate or replicate the information or experiment being discussed in the essay or assignment
- It is important to make sure that all copyright laws are followed and that the information included in the appendices is accurate
- Each appendix begins on a new page, and appendices follow any references, footnotes, tables or figures
- If only one appendix is included, label it “Appendix” in bold font, centered at the top of the page
- If an essay or assignment has more than one appendix, label each with a capital letter, e.g.: Appendix A, Appendix B, etc., in the order in which the information is referenced in the text.
- Each appendix should also have a title that describes its contents. The title appears in title case and in bold font, and it is centered at the top of the page.
- It is important to note that the Publication Manual has more information on appendices, while this section is only a summary. Students wishing to include appendices in their essay or assignment should review this information in the Publication Manual and their assignment to make sure that they are meeting all of the requirements.

What’s Next?
The next section explains how to format a reference list. It does not explain how to create reference list entries for different types of sources. This is found in Chapter 6.

An appendix comes after the reference list of an essay or assignment, and it contains any additional information such as raw data or interview transcripts. The information in the appendices is relevant but is too long or too detailed to include in the main body of the essay or assignment.
A reference list appears at the end of an assignment or essay, and it contains all of the reference list entries for information resources used for that assignment or essay.
A reference list entry is the information in a reference list at the end of an assignment or essay. Each source of information in an essay or assignment must have a reference list entry. An APA Style reference list entry includes author(s), a date, a title, and a source.
Resources, sometimes called sources, are sources of information; this is where information is found when conducting research. This can sometimes lead to confusion, because one of the pieces of information in a reference list entry is also called a source.
