Antemortem

Prior to death.

Autolysis

The breakdown of cells by the cell’s own enzymes (i.e. self-digestion).

Charring

The process of partial burning that results in blackening of the surface.

Clotting

A biological process in which the viscosity of the blood increases to stop further blood loss through a broken blood vessel.

Hematoma

Pooling or collection of blood outside of the larger vessels in the body.

Metabolite

Breakdown product of a drug through a chemical reaction within the body or during storage.

Perimortem

At or near the time of death.

Postmortem

After death.

Vitreous Humor

Fluid present in the eyeball, between the lens and the retina, which is unaffected by putrefaction, charring, trauma, and postmortem breakdown by microorganisms.
