Lossy

A type of file compression in which data is permanently removed and the quality is compromised.

Lossless

A type of file compression in which data is not permanently removed but the size of the digital file is still reduced.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group)

A small eight-bit lossy compression file type in which a picture is stored.

TIFF (Tag Image File Format)

A large 16-bit large lossless file type in which a picture can be stored.

Raw

A lossless file format where no adjustments have been made to the image.

Compression

A process to reduce the overall size of the file by reducing the size of the data (lossless) or by compromising on the quality of the picture and removing data (lossy).
