Capturing a Photo

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Step-by-step instructions on how to complete a task, such as photographing a scene or how to process an image after it is captured with a camera.

Enhancement

Procedures done to increase or improve the quality of the image captured.

Focal length (f)

An optical property of the lens that defines the location where light rays converge to form a sharp image. It is the distance, measured in millimetres (mm), from the optical centre of the lens and the camera sensor.

Depth-of-field (DOF)

The distance in front and behind the focal length where the image remains in focus. Factors that affect the DOF include aperture, the focal length, and the lens-to-subject distance.

Shutter speed

The shutter speed is the amount of time in seconds (or fractions of a second) that the shutter remains open to expose the image sensor to light

Human perspective

A photographic print that accurately represents the height, width, depth, and location of objects relative to each other, as would have been viewed by the photographer.

Camera- or lens-to-subject distance

The distance between the camera and the subject

Full frame

The sensor size for which the optics in DSLR cameras are designed in order to capture the entire image produced by the cameras optics by the sensor. It also refers to the sensor size that is equivalent to the size of 35mm film (24mm x 36mm).

Manipulation

Changing the information in the image, usually through editing, to have it appear a specific way. Common software includes Adobe Photoshop.

Flash-to-subject distance

The distance between the removable flash and the subject of interest.

Field of view (FOV)

The maximum area a camera can capture at a given focal length within an image.
