What is an elevator pitch?
According to the Indeed Editorial Team (2022), an elevator pitch is simply a way to introduce yourself to others in a professional context.[1] Delivering a clear, brief, descriptive introduction of yourself is integral to your career! You never know when you will have an opportunity to introduce yourself to someone who might be able to hire you.
Elevator pitches are a common method of introducing yourself. Why are they called elevator pitches? Imagine entering an elevator and discovering that the person in the elevator is someone who might want to hire you. You realize you have the perfect opportunity to make an impression, but you only have the time to introduce yourself until you reach the next stop. The term “elevator pitch” is also used in business and creative industries to tell people about your idea quickly.
The elevator pitch is brief but impactful. You could use the elevator pitch in a variety of settings: lineups at the bank or local coffee shop, a career fair, or at a professional event/networking session.
What’s in an elevator pitch introduction?
An effective elevator pitch contains the following items:
- Clear pronunciation of your name using the “James Bond Method” where you say your first name, pause, and then say your first and last name
- Natural, polished speech that is easy for the listener to hear
- One sentence describing who you are, your current role or what you are studying in school
- One sentence about your interests and/or a future career goal
Be brief! Most listeners will only be listening for a few seconds before they start to think about how to introduce themselves to you.
To develop your elevator pitch, start by writing out what you want to say, and then you can practice until you feel comfortable delivering it on the spot.

In addition to this post graduate program, I also have a Bachelor of Electronics and Electrical Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University from Nigeria. I am passionate about engineering, design, and energy efficiency. I am currently working part time as an operator in a manufacturing company.
