Respect
Respect is about acknowledging people’s feelings, and treating them with both care and understanding. It means listening to someone and showing empathy for their experiences. Treating all patients with respect is fundamental, regardless of their beliefs or circumstances. Being able to show respect for patients is crucial for situations where patients feel valued and understood, therefore leading to an improvement in health outcomes. Having respectful values also supports ethical practices by upholding patients’ rights, their dignity, as well as their autonomy. Creating an inclusive healthcare environment allows for both dignity and equality for all patients, and healthcare team members. Respect in the nursing profession contributes to a compassionate, collaborative and especially professional atmosphere, ultimately benefiting all.
