Project Management – PRJ1
Introduction
Project, projects everywhere! Photos from recent Fanshawe College projects. Projects, both big and small, play an essential role in achieving an organization’s strategic goals.
Projects are the primary way to deliver the changing needs of an organization in alignment with strategic objectives. Consider the following project examples across a variety of industries:
- Design and construction of a new healthcare facility.
- Video game development and the related market launch.
- Development of a mental health and substance use treatment program.
- A Canadian business expansion to the European market.
- New technology implementation in a movie theatre franchise.
- Conversion to cruelty-free production of cosmetics.
- Natural disaster response.
Combine your previous education and experience with Fanshawe’s eight-month project management graduate certificate to drive social and economic benefits. Upon graduation, you will possess enhanced analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills and a general understanding of the Canadian business environment.
Program Highlights and an Online Option
You will be studying at a graduate certificate level in a field that is in demand and relevant to today’s rapidly changing business environment.
The full-time two-semester program is offered in two delivery formats:
- Physical classroom delivery with three intakes per year (September, January and May).
- Asynchronous online delivery with one intake per year (September).
Part-time asynchronous online delivery is also available to accommodate your current employment schedule and obligations. Some students complete the program through a combination of delivery options.
The project management graduate certificate experience will provide you with the skills to:
- Identify and articulate project objectives and detailed stakeholder requirements.
- Understand and use fundamental business concepts and tools to deliver project success.
- Initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control a project.
- Manage project stakeholders, scope, costs, schedules, risk and quality.
- Use Agile methodologies to deliver projects in an uncertain and ever-changing world.
Toolkit
Students will develop a practical project management toolkit including:
- Project management methodologies aligned with A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) published by the Project Management Institute (PMI®)
- Microsoft Excel skills
- Microsoft Project skills
- Negotiation and communication skills
- Agile methodologies
Student Experience
You will be encouraged to join the Project Management Institute (PMI) as a student member and participate in a local chapter’s events and activities.
Your LinkedIn profile will be a priority for your project management career. One of your goals will be leveraging your access to LinkedIn Learning to identify and obtain project-related micro-credentials for your profile.
Upon completion of the first semester, you will be eligible to pursue the Project Management Institute (PMI) Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) designation or the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification (after completing the prescribed period of professional project management experience).
Your Future Career
Based on PMI’s most recent Talent Gap report (2021), “2.3 million people will be needed each year to fill all of the project management-oriented positions expected to open by 2030”. Organizations are under increasing pressure to remain competitive; those organizations need problem solvers with effective people skills who can enable change and support strategic goals. The top three skills that provide a career advantage to project managers are effective communication, practical problem-solving, and collaborative leadership.
A project manager career is a journey; frequently, it involves gaining experience in a specific industry while pursuing opportunities such as:
