Titilola Folarin – Current Employer: Intact Insurance

Titilola Folarin - IRM StudentI studied the Postgraduate program in Insurance & Risk Management at Fanshawe College. The program started back in January 2022, when the world was just coming out of the COVID pandemic, borders were beginning to open again and Fanshawe college as well as a lot of other institutions were delivering their lectures online. I was quite skeptical at first as I have always been used to a physical classroom, but I was pleasantly surprised at how the Professors made their classes very welcoming and engaging. Students felt seen and heard, and every question on the course material was answered without it seeming like a distraction. By summer of the same year, we transitioned smoothly into in – person classes, and the level of engagement did not wane. The courses were quite practical and hands-on by using real life workplace scenarios and providing great resources online.

Titilola Folarin - IRM Student at GraduationThe program encourages students to write the CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) exams, which usually comes up around semester exams, the course materials are the same. This way you are studying for both exams and most students would have completed at least 6 out of the 10 CIP exams by graduation. The program also created various opportunities for internship and full-time employment through several job fairs organized by the department, which connected students to industry leaders in the insurance industry and financial sector as a whole. I am proud to say that I benefitted greatly from this opportunity as I got to intern at Intact insurance and subsequently, transitioned into a full-time role upon graduation.

Meenakshi Kuppamuthu – Current Employment: Underwriting Associate

I recently graduated from the Insurance & Risk management program, which was my second and final program at Fanshawe college. Along with graduating, I also landed a job in the same sector, as an Underwriting Associate, which would not have been possible if not for the learning exposure and experiences gained during the tenure of this program.

In fact, it was during this time that I realized how much more of a vital role Insurance actually plays in our lives and the wide range of opportunities that this industry has to offer, starting from underwriting, claims, insurance broker/agent or even risk management. Of course, we can choose our field within this sector, based on our interest as the career options in this sector are not limited.

Moreover, as students of this amazing program, we always had various opportunities to learn. Be it the case studies, group discussions in class, or even the assignments, they always added to our knowledge in one way or the other. Most importantly, the frequent networking opportunities, both virtual and in-person events, such as, insurance career fairs and mock interviews with industry professionals directly, helped us connect with industry professionals, which really goes a long way in helping to shape us towards becoming an insurance professional ourselves.

Moreover, our dedicated and dear professors, who are industry experts themselves, provided us with not only theoretical but also practical knowledge in accordance with latest industry standards and requirements; these aspects provided great value to this program. Last, but definitely not the least, is the fact that we are also being trained to tackle professional exams, which include CIP, CRM and even RIBO; we are studying the same course materials, and we can also take these exams while being a student, which is definitely amazing.

Overall, I express my sincere gratitude to all my amazing professors for all the invaluable knowledge and experience they brought to us, in addition to providing us with constant guidance and support throughout. Thank you so much for the opportunity.
