3 Reflection on My Entry into Nursing

Ever since I was really young, I have always wanted to work in the healthcare field. I wasn’t sure where exactly, but my qualities that include; caregiving, empathy, and going above and beyond would be a perfect fit for nursing. Additionally, I have always wanted to be that person that someone feels they can call when they need medical advice or have any questions. I want to have that knowledge and make others feel better.

Champlain College, my residence.

I always knew I wanted to go to Trent for nursing because of their hands-on program, although I knew I would have to face some challenges. The first big challenge for me was moving over three hours away from home, away from my family, boyfriend, and best friends. I stressed about this move all summer, however once I got there it felt natural and that stress went away. Another challenge I had to face is the workload difference from high school to university. Although, I have been able to learn how to tackle this challenge by organizing and managing time properly.

As I stated earlier, I have always been drawn to helping others. Whether it was assisting friends and family, I found fulfillment in being there for people in times of need. However, it wasn’t until I began my nursing studies that I realized how deeply I wanted to connect that sense of care with my future profession. I chose nursing because it offers an opportunity to make a true difference in people’s lives, which is extremely important to me.

While I have not started my clinical practice yet, my time in seminars and lectures has already provided me with important insights into what it means to be a nurse. In particular, I’ve learned that nursing is as much about listening and support as it is about the diagnosis. The core values of nursing, such as empathy, integrity, and respect, are not just concepts, but are in every aspect of nursing care, which is why it is crucial to learn about and recognize. I am extremely excited to start my clinical and put these values into real work.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate is the huge responsibility nurses have in the healthcare system. I’ve learned that nursing is a field that demands both skill and emotional intelligence. It’s about more than simply administering medications or taking vitals, but it’s also about being there for patients, understanding their concerns, and doing whatever necessary for their overall well-being. Really understanding this has helped me realize the depths of nursing and how I can incorporate it into my clinical work. While I’m eager and nervous to begin hands on practice, I also recognize that it will take time to develop the clinical skills needed to provide safe and effective care.

As I prepare myself for my first clinical experience in the winter, I am both excited and very nervous. The thought of working directly with patients and applying what I’ve learned in a real-world setting is an exciting new chapter, but I also know that it won’t be entirely easy. I expect to feel nervous and stressed at times, but I am determined to push through and work as hard as I can because I have been given an amazing opportunity.

Reflecting on my entry into nursing, I realize that this is only the beginning of a long and rewarding journey. I have so much to learn, and I’m excited to continue building my knowledge, skills, and confidence in the coming months. The few months I have been in this program has already reassured my passion for nursing, and I am eager to begin my clinical experiences.
