2 Personal Values Statement

As I continue my education to getting my nursing degree, I realize how crucial it is to reflect on the values that make up who I am personally and professionally. These values shape the way I interact with others, approach challenges, and provide care to my patients. Four core values that stand out to me the most personally and in my journey in nursing include compassion, integrity, respect, and accountability. I will continue to honour these values on my journey into nursing, allowing me to be the nurse I hope to be.

Compassion to me, is the most crucial value that drives my desire to become a registered nurse. To have compassion means so much more than just feeling sorry for someone, what it’s truly about is making an effort to understand their struggles and respond back with kindness, empathy, and a genuine desire to help. In nursing, I believe compassion is what helps in creating trust between the nurse and patient, especially when a patient is vulnerable. I want to be the nurse who not only provides care but who is also a source of emotional support, taking the time to really listen, and do whatever I can to make them feel better. I know that by showing compassion, I can help make a difficult situation a little easier for my patients. Making an impact on people is one of my biggest goals in life, and nursing will help me accomplish that.

Integrity is another value that is extremely important to me. As a nurse in the making, I understand that I will face situations in which I have to make decisions that will directly impact the well-being of others. Acting with integrity means I will always do what is right, even when it’s challenging. I will never take the easy route and will be responsible. It means being honest, reliable, and utterly transparent in my actions and making sure that my patients receive the best care that they deserve. Integrity is also about holding myself accountable, being willing to admit when I make mistakes (which I know can be hard). I believe integrity is essential for building and maintaining that trust with patients and colleagues.

Respect for others is another core value that will not only make me a good nurse, but an overall good person. I believe that every single person, regardless of their background, culture, or beliefs, deserves to be treated with complete respect. In nursing, respect means recognizing the differences of each patient, and embracing them. It also means collaborating with colleagues in a way that values their knowledge and contributions. I strive to create an environment where all voices are heard and where each person feels valued. This respect for others helps create a positive and inclusive atmosphere, whether in a patient’s care or within the healthcare team. This kind of respect should not only be used for an individual’s profession, but in their everyday life.

Finally, accountability is a value that is have always had. Being accountable means taking responsibility for my actions, being reliable, and owning my role in patient care. I know that nursing is a profession where the stakes are high, and every decision can have a significant impact on someone’s health. Thus, sometimes lying could be the easy way out, but it is not the right way out. It means being open to feedback and learning from every experience. Through accountability, I will do my best to provide the best care possible and to contribute to the safety and well-being of my patients.

These values that I live by daily, compassion, integrity, respect, and accountability, make up who I am as a person and will continue to use in my nursing practice. They are principles I will use to get through tough challenges, connect with patients, and work as part of a healthcare team. As I continue to grow in my nursing journey, I am committed to living by these values, knowing that they will not only shape the care I provide but also the kind of nurse I become.
