1 Philosophy of Nursing Statement

Belief Statement

As a nursing student, I believe that nursing is both a science and an art. It’s a rewarding profession that requires knowledge and skills, but also real compassion, empathy, and a commitment to caring for every individual. To me, nursing is about so much more than just diagnosing and treating illness. Instead, it’s about supporting and truly caring for patients in a way that respects their unique needs and values, ultimately helping them heal in every aspect; physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Core Values

Holistic Care:

I believe holistic care as being one of the most important approaches to nursing. This means looking at the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of a person, not just their medical condition. Health is not just the body’s function, but it’s also about balance and well-being in all aspects of a person’s life. As a future nurse, I want to care for the person as a whole, understanding that everyone has different experiences, backgrounds, and challenges that influence their health. I will never judge or stereotype a person because everyone deserves equal care. By providing holistic care, I hope to make a meaningful impact, and help provide a good healing experience.

Compassion:

Compassion is at the core of my philosophy of nursing. I believe it’s essential to show empathy and kindness in every interaction with patients, whether they are going through a challenging time or simply seeking advice. But nursing isn’t just about providing care; it’s also about advocating for patients who may not have a voice or the power to speak up for themselves. I want to be a nurse who listens, supports, and stands up for my patients, ensuring they get the best care possible and that their concerns are heard.

Collaboration:

I believe that nursing and good patient care does not occur when nurses are working alone. It requires working with a team of healthcare professionals including, doctors, social workers, therapists, etc. No individual person has all the answers, and by working together, we can better meet the unique and diverse needs of our patients to provide the care they deserve. I have always been an open communicator and team player and know I will bring these characteristics into my future nursing career, hoping to make a bigger difference in patients’ lives.

Respect for Diversity:

Every person is unique, and I believe it’s crucial to understand and respect the cultural, social, and personal backgrounds of the people I care for. As a nurse, it is crucial to remember that we are all people with different beliefs and values, and these differences should never alter the patients care. Cultural competence means being aware of how a patient’s culture, beliefs, and values influence their health and care decisions. I strive to be the kind of nurse who recognizes the importance of these differences and provides care that is inclusive and respectful.

Ethical Practice:

I believe that a good nurse must have good ethical principles. Being honest and kind, maintaining confidentiality, and respecting every patient are key aspects to being a good nurse. As a future nurse, I can promise to work hard to uphold these ethical standards, even in challenging situations. I can also promise that when I am in a challenging situation that I will ask for a second opinion to ensure I am doing the right and ethical thing. Integrity is also essential as a nurse in order to build trust with patients, their families, and my colleagues.

Vision for My Nursing Practice

Looking into my future, I see myself as a nurse who is not only committed to providing high-quality care but also driven to doing whatever I can to consistently better myself as a nurse. I want to be a nurse who genuinely listens, understands what my patients need, and will come up with an effective plan that fits theirs need in order to heal. I also hope to go the extra mile by contributing to improving healthcare practices, always looking for ways to make a positive impact on the profession.

Additionally, I want to take on leadership roles where I can advocate for policies that make healthcare more accessible and equitable for everyone. I can also see myself mentoring and guiding new nurses. I know how nerve wracking being a new can be (I am a new nurse right now!), and by sharing the knowledge and skills I’ve learned through the years, I can help them become confident nurses.

Ultimately, my philosophy of nursing reflects my commitment to caring for people in a holistic, compassionate, and ethical way. I believe in nursing’s ability to heal, support, and improve lives, and I am extremely eager to continue learning and growing in this profession as I take on new challenges and opportunities.
