SMART Goals for My Journey Ahead

Here are my two specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals for my nursing journey ahead

  1. Become proficient in the Basics of Patient Assessment

My goal for the upcoming winter semester ahead is to learn and begin honing my clinical practice skills during my long term care placement. Specifically, I am aiming to improve my ability to recognize when assistance is needed, and how to be of assistance as a nurse. To measure my progress, I will chart and write in my journal to keep track of my personal success, learnings, and areas of improvement, as well as seek weekly feedback from my preceptor. This goal aligns with my aspiration to provide compassionate holistic care and is achievable by the end of the semester around April 2025.

2. Strengthen interpersonal communication with patients and families

My standing goal for the longevity of my career is to constantly improve and strengthen my communication skills with patients and their families. Specifically, I aim to improve my ability to accurately explain medical processed and procedures in an easy to understand and digestible manor. I will practice this skill when I enter my first placement and will expedite my practice when I enter my placement in a hospital setting. I will measure my success through feedback from those I interact with by the end of my clinical rotation in my Summer 2025 semester. Though this goal is aimed to be achieved by August 2025, I recognize I have my entire career’s time to perfect and hone.
