Sem 1: NURS 1550 – Intro to Life Sciences

In my first year, I took a foundational course called “Introduction to Human Nutrition, Microbiology, and Pharmacology,” which provided an overview of key principles relevant to nursing practice. This course focused on personal health and wellness, introducing basic elements of nutrition, the role of pathogens in infectious disease, and the fundamentals of pharmacology, including drug calculations.

We explored nutritional needs with an emphasis on health promotion and maintenance, examining macronutrients and micronutrients and their significance for overall well-being. The course also covered how pathogens can lead to infectious diseases, highlighting the vital role healthcare providers play in infection control. Additionally, we learned about pharmacokinetics and safe medication administration practices, with a focus on performing accurate medication dose calculations and understanding factors that contribute to medication errors.

The diverse teaching methods included lectures, discussions, and practical exercises, culminating in assignments that encouraged critical thinking about health and safety in nursing. Overall, this course laid a solid foundation for my nursing education, deepening my understanding of the interconnectedness of nutrition, microbiology, and pharmacology in promoting patient care and health outcomes. This course expanded my knowledge and made me reflect on the importance of holistic health in my future nursing practice.
