NRSG24-PN Clinical IVB

This course has provided an invaluable opportunity for me to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve developed throughout my nursing education, particularly in the context of the maternal newborn unit. Engaging with the principles from Nursing Theory and Health Assessment has allowed me to integrate important nursing practices such as humanistic caring, reflective practice, and critical thinking into my daily interactions.

A significant part of my experience has involved identifying my learning needs specific to the maternal newborn context. As I conducted nursing assessments on clients—both mothers and newborns—I collaborated closely with families to ensure culturally safe assessments that respected their backgrounds and beliefs. This holistic approach has enhanced my ability to provide care tailored to individual needs.

In the process of selecting appropriate assessment tools, I’ve actively engaged with literature and consulted with colleagues to ensure I’m using the best practices for my assessments. Identifying clients’ healthcare needs in a supportive environment has been crucial in achieving mutually agreed health outcomes.

Utilizing the nursing process has been essential in caring for the increasingly complex needs of clients in the maternal newborn unit. I have developed my critical thinking and problem-solving skills to adapt to the unique challenges presented in this setting. Adhering to the Professional Standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario has ensured that I prioritize client rights, obtain informed consent, and maintain confidentiality and dignity throughout my care.

My organizational and time management skills have been tested as I provided care for multiple clients simultaneously. This experience has helped me develop strategies to deliver effective care efficiently. I’ve also taken time to reflect on my communication skills, considering how they affect my interactions with clients, families, and the healthcare team.

Independently preparing and administering medications has further solidified my confidence and competence in clinical practice. Understanding various leadership styles and their application within the maternal newborn unit has been enlightening, allowing me to recognize the roles and responsibilities of different team members.

I’ve developed nursing care plans specific to the needs of mothers and newborns, responding swiftly to any changes in their conditions. Working collaboratively with the interprofessional health care team has been invaluable in modifying and evaluating care plans as needed.

Throughout this course, I have gained insights into my practice strengths and areas for growth. Evaluating my critical thinking and problem-solving skills has encouraged me to integrate research findings into my practice effectively.

Additionally, I have remained vigilant in recognizing and reporting potentially unsafe situations within the practice environment, ensuring the safety and well-being of my clients. My evaluation of the impact of informatics and technologies in healthcare has also highlighted how these tools can enhance maternal and newborn care.

Finally, I have applied the principles of cultural safety in my interactions and care plans, ensuring that I reflect on these considerations in my practice. This course has profoundly shaped my understanding and skills in maternal newborn nursing, preparing me to deliver compassionate and effective care in the future.
