NRSG23-PN Clinical IVA

This course has provided me with a valuable opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills I’ve acquired from previous nursing courses. Throughout my time in the mental health unit, I’ve integrated essential approaches to nursing practice, such as humanistic caring, reflective practice, and critical thinking. These principles have guided my interactions with clients and shaped my understanding of their unique needs.

One key aspect of my experience has been identifying my learning needs to foster personal and professional growth within this specific clinical context. As I conducted nursing assessments for clients with varying degrees of complexity, I collaborated with individuals across the lifespan to ensure culturally safe practices, which is crucial in a mental health setting.

I’ve also focused on reviewing literature and consulting colleagues to select appropriate assessment tools and techniques. This collaborative approach has enriched my assessments and ensured that I meet clients’ health care needs in an environment that promotes achieving mutually agreed outcomes.

Utilizing the nursing process has been vital as I care for clients in the mental health unit. I’ve developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address their unique challenges, while also adhering to the Professional Standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Respecting clients’ rights, obtaining informed consent, and maintaining confidentiality have been central to my practice.

Managing care for multiple clients has sharpened my organizational and time management skills, allowing me to deliver effective care efficiently. I’ve also reflected on my communication skills, recognizing their impact on my interactions with clients, families, and the healthcare team.

Demonstrating independence in the safe preparation and administration of medications has been another significant aspect of my training. I’ve learned about different leadership styles and how to apply them within the clinical environment, enhancing my understanding of roles and responsibilities.

In collaboration with the interprofessional health care team, I’ve developed nursing care plans tailored to identified issues and have adapted these plans as situations evolved. This dynamic approach has taught me to respond effectively to rapidly changing circumstances.

Throughout this experience, I’ve gained insight into my strengths and areas for improvement, continually refining my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I’ve critiqued research findings and integrated them into my practice, ensuring a comprehensive approach to care.

Moreover, I’ve been vigilant in recognizing and reporting potentially unsafe situations within the practice environment, which is essential for maintaining a safe space for all clients. Finally, I’ve evaluated the impact of informatics and technologies in healthcare, considering how these tools can enhance patient care.

Overall, this course has significantly shaped my understanding of mental health nursing and has equipped me with the skills necessary to provide culturally safe and effective care in a clinical setting.
