NRSG154-Clinical V

This placement experience has been pivotal in transitioning me into the role of a graduate Practical Nurse, allowing me to integrate theoretical knowledge and clinical skills within the mental health setting. Throughout this experience, I’ve embraced the principles of humanistic caring, reflective practice, and critical thinking, which have shaped my interactions and approaches to care.

One of my key accomplishments has been independently identifying and planning learning experiences that support my personal and professional growth. I created a learning plan with SMART goals, identifying relevant resources and metrics for success, aligning with the College of Nurses of Ontario’s quality assurance process.

In the context of mental health, I have demonstrated my understanding of growth and development, applying this knowledge to plan care tailored to the needs of clients and their families. I’ve effectively utilized the nursing process, ensuring that my assessments, diagnoses, interventions, and evaluations are thorough and responsive to clients’ complex needs.

Therapeutic communication has been a focal point of my practice. I have developed a range of communication strategies tailored to the diverse abilities and backgrounds of clients, family members, and the healthcare team. This adaptability has improved my interactions and fostered stronger relationships.

In addition, I’ve taken the initiative to develop and implement health teaching measures grounded in evidence-informed research. This has included collaborating with clients and families to ensure that teaching is relevant and impactful, enhancing their understanding of mental health issues and self-care strategies.

Assuming an active role on the multi-disciplinary healthcare team has enriched my experience. I have collaborated closely with colleagues from various disciplines, contributing to holistic care planning and implementation.

Continuous reflection on my learning has been integral to my development. I have utilized feedback from peers and clinical faculty, incorporating their insights to refine my practice and improve care delivery.

Critical thinking has been essential in my decision-making processes. I’ve confidently accepted responsibility for my actions, making evidence-informed decisions while ensuring safe and competent care for my clients. This has included adjusting my approaches based on ongoing assessments and client feedback.

Adhering to the Professional Standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario has guided my practice. I prioritize clients’ rights, maintain confidentiality, and respect their dignity throughout all interactions.

Demonstrating leadership skills has been an important aspect of my role. I have taken on responsibilities that include team leadership and directing the work of non-regulated health care providers, fostering a collaborative environment.

Finally, I have emphasized cultural safety in my practice. By reflecting on my interactions and integrating culturally sensitive approaches into my nursing care plans, I have built therapeutic relationships that respect clients’ diverse backgrounds.

Overall, this placement has greatly enhanced my skills and understanding of mental health nursing, preparing me to deliver compassionate and competent care in my future practice.
