This clinical course provided me with an invaluable opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge, principles, and skills gained from previous courses, including Practical Nursing Theory, Nursing Skill Labs, and Health Assessment. Throughout my clinical placements in complex continuing care and medical units, I integrated essential approaches to nursing practice, such as humanistic caring, reflective practice, and health promotion.
I demonstrated accountability in my teaching-learning relationships, consistently ensuring safe and competent nursing care for clients facing various stressors. By mid-term, I showed progress towards independence, reflecting my growth in evidence-informed and holistic practice.
Effective communication was a key focus, and I independently employed a range of strategies to build and maintain therapeutic nurse-client relationships. My participation as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team contributed to the achievement of clients’ health and independence goals.
Ethical practice was paramount as I engaged in respectful and collaborative relationships, advocating for patient health promotion and illness prevention. Under the supervision of my clinical instructor, I evaluated client responses to nursing care, refining my ability to predict and assess outcomes.
I took the initiative to develop and revise individualized care plans, recognizing the impact of growth and development on health status. My competency in procedures requiring sterile techniques and safe medication administration was continually reinforced through hands-on practice.
Reflective practice guided my professional development, allowing me to assess my competencies and engage in critical inquiry. I consistently met the specific learning outcomes for my assigned specialty unit, demonstrating a commitment to cultural safety and the application of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Practice. Overall, this clinical experience solidified my readiness for a nursing career, equipping me with the skills and insights necessary for effective patient care.
