Practical Nursing Theory I

This course introduced me to the foundational concepts and principles essential to the nursing discipline. I learned about key topics such as nursing, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice, therapeutic communication, and the nursing process. Throughout the course, we integrated important beliefs and approaches to nursing practice, including reflective practice, therapeutic use of self, and health promotion.

The course also helped me develop research skills, allowing me to analyze a current nursing issue using evidence-based practice and recommend alternative solutions. I gained awareness, respect, and sensitivity for client diversity, emphasizing the importance of integrating each client’s unique needs into nursing care.

I learned to select appropriate communication techniques tailored to individual client needs, which are vital for establishing a therapeutic nurse-client relationship.

Finally, I explored various communication strategies, including reporting, documenting, and health teaching, to effectively convey key information to clients, families, and the inter-professional healthcare team. This comprehensive course prepared me to engage thoughtfully and effectively in my nursing practice.
