This course was designed for Practical Nursing students to explore core concepts related to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and their application in promoting safe nursing care. We examined Health Information Systems (HISs), the components of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), and other technologies utilized in healthcare settings that enhance patient care.
I learned about the critical importance of privacy, confidentiality, and security in the collection and use of health information. The course also focused on managing digital files, retrieving information from D2L, and uploading assignments to Dropbox.
I developed my professional communication skills in accordance with the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Additionally, I gained introductory proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
We identified the legal requirements related to accessing, using, and disclosing personal health information, ensuring compliance with CNO regulations. I also demonstrated an understanding of key CNO practice standards and guidelines, including Privacy & Confidentiality, Consent, and Documentation.
By the end of the course, I successfully navigated multiple electronic health records (EHRs) and completed both paper and electronic documentation, reinforcing my skills in accurate and secure health information management. This course equipped me with essential knowledge and competencies for utilizing ICTs in nursing practice.
