Intro to indigenous Studies

This course provided an introduction to the study of Indigenous peoples in Canada, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. It explored the complex historical and contemporary relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, encouraging an understanding of the diversity and depth of Indigenous societies, worldviews, and knowledge through a multi-disciplinary lens.

By the end of the course, I gained a greater understanding and appreciation of Canada’s shared history, including the impacts of colonialism, and learned to retell and critically examine this history from an Indigenous perspective. I became familiar with key concepts and terminology related to the diverse cultural, political, and community systems of contemporary Indigenous peoples.

I was able to present contextually informed responses to selected historical and contemporary topics concerning Indigenous peoples and their contributions to Canada. The course helped me articulate and address various assumptions and stereotypes about Indigenous communities, allowing me to better understand differing Canadian perspectives.

I also explored my individual attitudes and perceptions towards Indigenous cultures and historical realities, fostering greater sensitivity and empathy toward the challenges faced by Indigenous communities. Recognizing the value of Indigenous cultures within dominant societies, I learned about the importance of restoring Nation-to-Nation relationships.

Finally, I identified connections between Indigenous knowledge, history, and perspectives that will further inform my career-specific applications. This course enriched my understanding of Indigenous peoples and their vital role in Canadian society.
