Reflective Practice Template
There is no right or wrong way to reflect on your practice. Different people learn in
different ways and while one person may learn by reflecting on a positive outcome,
another may find it most useful to focus on a situation they found challenging.
Below we have provided some prompts to help you add value to your reflection.
Some prompts will be more relevant than others depending on your event, your
practise and whether you are reflecting as a group or an individual.
The below method is in alignment with LEARN format.

I’m reflecting on my time spent in the PICU and things I learnt |
Elaborate in Writing- ELABORATE |
Spending some time in the Picu I got to observe interactions between nurses, doctors and security. I also saw how everybody acted during a code white. I felt like it was a very educational moment for me. When working on other floors I don’t usually get to see a lot interactions between nurses and other health care workers, but it was nice to see how these interactions can help keep nurses safe. I also got to see the quick response after a code white and how the number of people could have been very overwhwlming for the patient. |
ANALYZE |
This experience helped me learn how communication within the healthcare team is important as it can help keep nurses safe and how in the PICU settings specifically sleep and medication is very important for the patients. I learned that in these situations it can become hard to separate work and life and it is important to be able to have strategies to allow yourself to not get too attached. |
Looking back- REVISE |
Looking back I believe that since I wasn’t too sure what to expect. It surprised me to see the sudden change in clients that would seem to have no problem at first and how nurses and even doctors dealt with the situations to try de-escalate the situation or accidently escalate the situation. |
Looking forward- NEW LEARNING NEED & GOAL |
Looking forward I will use the the information I learned to get along with my future team, use strategies to deescalate a situation that could be getting worse. I also will learn how to keep in my mind my patient by attempting to not make them feel overwhelmed while keeping in mind strategies to make sure I don’t get too attached. |
