Reflective Practice

Reflective Practice Template

There is no right or wrong way to reflect on your practice. Different people learn in

different ways and while one person may learn by reflecting on a positive outcome,

another may find it most useful to focus on a situation they found challenging.

Below we have provided some prompts to help you add value to your reflection.

Some prompts will be more relevant than others depending on your event, your

practise and whether you are reflecting as a group or an individual.

The below method is in alignment with LEARN format.

What event or topic are you reflecting on? LOOK BACK
I’m reflecting on my time spent in the PICU and things I learnt
Elaborate in Writing- ELABORATE
Spending some time in the Picu I got to observe interactions between nurses, doctors and security. I also saw how everybody acted during a code white. I felt like it was a very educational moment for me. When working on other floors I don’t usually get to see a lot interactions between nurses and other health care workers, but it was nice to see how these interactions can help keep nurses safe. I also got to see the quick response after a code white and how the number of people could have been very overwhwlming for the patient.
ANALYZE
This experience helped me learn how communication within the healthcare team is important as it can help keep nurses safe and how in the PICU settings specifically sleep and medication is very important for the patients. I learned that in these situations it can become hard to separate work and life and it is important to be able to have strategies to allow yourself to not get too attached.
Looking back- REVISE
Looking back I believe that since I wasn’t too sure what to expect. It surprised me to see the sudden change in clients that would seem to have no problem at first and how nurses and even doctors dealt with the situations to try de-escalate the situation or accidently escalate the situation.
Looking forward- NEW LEARNING NEED & GOAL
Looking forward I will use the the information I learned to get along with my future team, use strategies to deescalate a situation that could be getting worse. I also will learn how to keep in my mind my patient by attempting to not make them feel overwhelmed while keeping in mind strategies to make sure I don’t get too attached.

What event or topic are you reflecting on? LOOK BACK
During one of my clinical days, after I had done my vitals, head to toe and patient care I decided to go to my nurse and asked if there was anything I could help her with. My nurse then proceeded to tell there was nothing for now, thanked me for my help and suggested I’d go ask other nurses if they assistance. I continues answering call bells and looking to see if anyone would need any extra help. Not to long after a nurse approached me and asked me if I could help do vitals on two of his patients. I went to grab the vitals machine I was going to head to the other side of the room to do vitals on the other patient first but then I saw the patient closer to me did not look too good so I decided I would vitlas on that patient first, since the patient was also closer to me. I began with blood pressure and Spo2 that’s when I noticed that the spo2 kept on dropping and dropping I did not bother finishing the rest of the vitals and went to the nurse immediately. As soon as I informed the nurse he ran to the patient room with some other nurses to make sure to get the Spo2 back to normal.

The people involved in this event where me, around 3-5 other nurses and a patient. A feeling that I definitely found myself experiencing was uncertainty. I remember that the Spo2 was initially good but then started to decrease, I thought it would go back up but then saw it continue to decrease more and more so for a moment I wasn’t sure what to do and felt uncertain but as the spo2 continued to decrease I began to feel a bit worried, I told the patient that I would be back and went to get the nurse of the patient. After that the nurse ran into the patient room and a few other nurses followed to make sure everything was okay. After I called the nurses I did nothing but observe how everyone worked together to make sure the patient Spo2 is returned back to normal. At the end I was glad I went and immediately called the nurse.

ANALYZE
The spo2 wasn’t tge only sign something was wrong with the patient. The patient was also heavily breathing and struggling, I could hear loud wheezes and was also cyanotic. I remember before taking vitals feeling slightly uncomfortable because it felt like the patient wasn’t doing very well which was confirmed by the Spo2. Overall I found it an Interesting experience. I got to watch how everyone worked together to make sure the patient is stable, which helped me see firsthand the importance of teamwork in critical situations.
Looking back- REVISE
Looking back I am happy with how I reacted the only thing I would change next time is to act a bit faster in such a situation and avoid waiting too long before I make the choice to act and that even if I am uncertain I know I have people around who can help me out especially as a student.

Looking forward- NEW LEARNING NEED & GOAL
After this experience I learned one way to act during an emergency situations. This type of situations a fast response is needed a way for me to improve reaction time during emergency situations is to equipment myself with strategies on what to do during different type of situations by the end of the semester using resources like my class textbooks, articles and videos. In this way I’ll have built in responses that will help speed up the process when encountering an emergency situation.
