Reflective Practice

Reflective Practice Template

There is no right or wrong way to reflect on your practice. Different people learn in

different ways and while one person may learn by reflecting on a positive outcome,

another may find it most useful to focus on a situation they found challenging.

Below we have provided some prompts to help you add value to your reflection.

Some prompts will be more relevant than others depending on your event, your

practise and whether you are reflecting as a group or an individual.

The below method is in alignment with LEARN format.

What event or topic are you reflecting on? LOOK BACK
I am reflecting on my first day of clinical placemen on the maternity floor of the hospital. The day began with my instructor assigning me a patient and a nurse. I observed a baby bath, helped with a surgical patient, performed vitals observed my nurse and did some documentation but at the end of the shift had failed to demonstrate the knowledge of a semester 4 student. At the end of the day my instructor approached me and called me aside to offer me some feedback and provided me with resources to look over, to better prepare myself for the following week.

Elaborate in Writing- ELABORATE
I as well as my instructor were the ones involved. I was involved as more of a participant while my instructor observed me throughout the day to provide me with the feedback needed to improve for next time. After receiving the feedback, I went over the resources my instructor gave me and decided to also watch videos to reinforce and help to better my understanding. As I wanted to ensure the next time I was on the floor I would be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge of a semester 4 student.
ANALYZE
Even though my performance that day wasn’t good, the experience was not bad. I was able to receive good constructive feedback which guided me and helped me focus on areas of improvement. I wasn’t allowed to make the same mistake over and over again which allowed me to act on my mistakes and improve on my actions. I was able to learn necessary skills that will be needed in my future practice while coming across resources to help me better understand certain skills and assessments. This is an experience that had value for me because of response and what I was able to learn.
Looking back- REVISE
I am satisfied with how I responded because of the improvement I was able to show the following week. I believe having my instructor show concern and calling me aside to provide me with constructive feedback that I used to try to improve was a good reaction that I was able to positively respond to. I was able to reinforce learning such as patient education, newborn assessment and documentation. I have learned the importance on reflecting on my day at the end of a shift and work on constant improvent and as a result moving forward I will continue to reflect on my day and take actionto improve with each week

Looking forward- NEW LEARNING NEED & GOAL
Looking forward I will continue to reflect on my performance to learn to continue improve. This will ensure I am up to date with my learning, knowledge and skills in this way also helping the patients I will be supporting. This event helped me realize how reflecting on my day can help me better improve my practice.

By the end of every clinical shift I will reflect on what went well and what needed improvement and then will take the action needed to improve. I will know that I have achieved this goal when I am able to see improvement the following week.
