NRSG195-Pharmacology Applications B

This course has been pivotal in deepening my understanding of pharmacology and its applications within nursing practice. Building on the foundations laid in Pharmacology Applications A, I’ve connected pharmacotherapeutics with nursing theory, family care, and practical skills, focusing on predictable and less-complex conditions that pose a low risk for negative outcomes.

One of the core skills I developed was utilizing the drug classification system to identify medications related to conditions affecting the endocrine, peripheral vascular, cardiac, and respiratory systems. This knowledge is crucial for understanding how different medications can impact patient care.

I also integrated foundational knowledge from Pharmacology Applications A, particularly around ADEM (Assessment, Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Monitoring), which helped me ensure safe administration of the drug classifications covered in this course. This integration has been essential for developing my competence in medication management.

Applying the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—specifically related to drug therapy has become a key focus. I learned how to systematically approach drug therapy, ensuring that each step is thoughtfully executed to optimize patient outcomes.

Understanding the competencies and descriptors outlined in the College of Nurses Medication Standard has been critical for clarifying my responsibilities when administering medications. This knowledge has reinforced the importance of adhering to professional standards and guidelines in my nursing practice.

Client education is another vital area I’ve focused on. I learned to communicate essential information regarding expected effects, potential reactions, informed consent, and ethical considerations related to selected drug therapies. This is crucial for empowering clients to engage in their care.

Moreover, the course emphasized the potential impact of errors in the medication administration process. I’ve gained insights into how these errors can affect patient safety and outcomes, highlighting the need for vigilance and accuracy in all aspects of medication management.

Finally, I developed the skills to accurately calculate drug dosages using accepted methods, ensuring that I can confidently determine the correct doses for administration. This competency is fundamental to safe nursing practice.

Overall, this course has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of pharmacology as it relates to nursing, preparing me to deliver safe and effective medication management in my future practice.
