Virtual Simulation: Interview & Functional Assessment

Self-Debrief

Please respond to the following questions in sentence form, providing references to support your answers when required. Please review the virtual simulation marking rubric (on D2L) for evaluation criteria.

  1. Provide a summary of the virtual simulation from your perspective (1 mark).

In this simulation both the patient and his wife felt differently about the situation that were experiencing but by making them a part of decisions and receiving consent The health professional was able to gain enough trust to avoid problems that could have escalated while at the same time successfully complete an interview and assessment.

  1. What thoughts/values/beliefs guided your decision-making during this virtual gaming simulation? Will these be the same values that guide your decision-making in practice (2 marks)?

My decision making process was mostly guided by my knowledge from past simulations and topics that I learnt from my instructors and classes I have attended to with a bit of my personal belief of right and wrong. In practice I will avoid relying on personal beliefs and will likely focus on using experience and lesson I have been taught has my personal guide in my decision-making process.

  1. What communication strategies did the healthcare professional use to develop a rapport with the patient?

Some communication strategies that the healthcare professional used to develop a rapport with the patient was keeping the conversation patient centered and doing the possible best to build trust towards the patient by avoiding to jump straight into what may be considered sensitive issues, acknowledging client feelings and referring back to patients or their families comments and concerns.

  1. Did you note any barriers or challenges to communication? If so, how did the healthcare professional overcome these?

Some challenges I noted were some of Cynthia’s responses showing signs of stress like a raised tone and Adams persistence on not needing help. Some ways the health professional overcame these were by acknowledging Cynthia’s feeling and providing reassurance while at the same time not discarding Adams.

  1. Based on a self-assessment of your strengths and weaknesses as well as your performance in the simulation and while interviewing peers in lab, what challenge(s) do you foresee leading up to your Telehealth Simulation which will take place in Weeks 9, 10, 11, or 12? How will you overcome this challenge? Please include the reference of a specific resource that will support you in being successful in the telehealth simulation.

I might find a bit of trouble making my client a part of my decision-making process and making sure they understand the reason behind it. How will overcome this challenge by continuing to educate myself on how to do this by watching videos, practicing case studies or simulations and reading my class textbook Canadian Fundamentals.

  1. How does this or will this virtual simulation apply to your clinical practice?

This Virtual simulation will apply to my virtual practice by educating, providing and preparing me with skills that I will use in my practice, since the simulation demonstrates possible life scenarios that I may encounter in my future.

  1. What did you like about this virtual simulation?

I liked how after selecting a wrong and right option a reasoning was given to explain the choice and it’s results.

  1. What would you change about this virtual simulation?

One thing I may change about this virtual simulation is that in addition to providing an explanation on why an option is incorrect to also give a visual interpretation to what could happen when an incorrect option is chosen.
