SMART Goals
Short-Term Goals
Improve Study Habits
For the upcoming semester (Winter 2025), my primary objective is to maintain a minimum academic average of 75% across all required courses in the BScN program, ensuring my eligibility for a critical care placement in my fourth year. With NURS 1020H being my first clinical course, I aim to effectively balance academic responsibilities with hands-on learning opportunities in labs, simulations, and my long-term care placement. To achieve this, I will dedicate 12 hours per week to structured study sessions and utilize campus resources such as peer study groups and instructor office hours to deepen my understanding of foundational nursing concepts. This approach will help me meet the academic and professional standards necessary to achieve my long-term career goals.
Develop Clinical Skills
I aspire to develop foundational clinical skills during NURS 1020H to prepare for future high-acuity placements. This includes mastering basic nursing skills such as patient assessments, documentation, and therapeutic communication while building confidence in a resident-centered care environment. I will actively engage in weekly simulation labs and practice sessions at the Trent Simulation Hub to enhance my technical proficiency and clinical judgment. By the end of the semester, my objective is to receive positive feedback on my skill development and professionalism from instructors and preceptors, confirming my readiness for more complex clinical experiences in future semesters.
Long-Term Goal
Critical Care Placement
My long-term goal is to secure a Level 4 clinical placement in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and graduate from Trent University’s BScN program as a compressed student in the Fall of 2026. To achieve this, I will focus on maintaining the required minimum academic average of 75% throughout the program and consistently demonstrate accountability, critical thinking, and skill development in my clinical courses. I will seek mentorship from instructors and preceptors during placements to strengthen my preparation for critical care nursing. By submitting a compelling letter of intent for the ICU placement in my fourth year and continuously refining my technical and interpersonal skills, I am confident that I will achieve my goal of working in the ICU and advancing toward a career in critical care nursing.
