SOCI 1001H: Introduction to Sociology I: Critical Foundations
A disadvantage of writing my reflections so far away from the date of the original course is that some courses I simply do not remember much at all. For this course, the things that come to mind are the fact that it was a 3 hour lecture 7-10 pm on Tuesday evenings. My professor usually did lecture for the full 3 hours, and I had Wednesday morning rugby practices at 6AM.
In terms of actual content, I found it interesting – but it was obvious this was not my passion. It was a broad and general class, and I did not think it was particularly relevant to what I wanted to do. This class did give me my first major writing assignment though – a 12-page essay. This professor was smart, and eased us into it. By that, she required drafts of the essays be handed in for marks and feedback before the final submission. I recall even attending some extra help in which she personally had booked times with academic advisors for students in this sociology class to visit and get further feedback on their essays. I had felt very confident with my essay, especially with all the extra help. I did get a good mark – but not what I thought. It was my first introduction to the new standard of writing I was expected to reach and uphold (and I did not know what I was in for).
