Nursing Values

8 Core Values of Nursing | Goodwin College

As a current nurse and a nursing student, my four core nursing values including accountability, professionalism, compassion, and trustworthiness, are the foundation of my practice and guide the way I approach patient care, collaborate with colleagues, and engage with the healthcare system.

Accountability is fundamental to my role as a nurse and student as it involves taking full responsibility for my actions, decisions, and outcomes in patient care. I hold myself accountable not only for adhering to clinical guidelines and best practices but also for advocating for my patients’ well-being and safety. This means being proactive in identifying potential issues, seeking guidance when necessary, and consistently reflecting on my practice to ensure that I am providing the highest quality care. Accountability also extends to owning up to mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth and improvement, both for myself and for the healthcare team.

Professionalism is another key value that shapes my approach to nursing. I understand that professionalism encompasses not only clinical competence but also ethical behavior, integrity, and respect in all interactions. It requires me to continually develop my skills and knowledge, stay current with medical advancements, and adhere to ethical principles and regulatory standards set by organizations like the College of Nurses of Ontario. Being professional also means demonstrating reliability and consistency in my interactions with patients and colleagues, fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust. Compassion lies at the heart of nursing care. It is not just about performing tasks or procedures but about deeply understanding and responding to the emotional, physical, and psychological needs of patients. I believe that every patient deserves to be treated with empathy, kindness, and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Compassion goes beyond clinical competence, it involves actively listening to patients, validating their feelings, and offering emotional support during times of vulnerability. By showing compassion, I can create an environment where patients feel seen, heard, and valued, which, in turn, promotes healing and well-being. I recognize that compassionate care can make a significant difference in a patient’s experience and recovery, helping to alleviate anxiety, fear, and discomfort.

Trustworthiness is a value I hold as it is the foundation of effective healthcare relationships, whether with patients, their families, or my colleagues. As a nurse, I strive to build trust by being honest, transparent, and consistent in all my actions. I understand that patients must trust me with their most intimate health information and rely on my expertise to make informed decisions about their care. I also recognize that trust is built through my actions over time, through demonstrated competence, integrity, and ethical conduct. Being trustworthy means honoring patient confidentiality, providing accurate information, and being a dependable member of the healthcare team.

Together these values motivate me to provide care that is both technically skilled and compassionate, placing the patient’s well-being at the heart of everything I do. They guide my decision-making, ensure that I remain grounded in my professional responsibilities, and remind me of the importance of compassion in the healing process. By aligning my personal values with the regulatory standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, I am committed to practicing in a way that is ethical, accountable, and aligned with the needs and dignity of my patients, ensuring that I am always striving to improve and provide the best care possible.
