My name is Jessica Trepanier. I am currently a student at Trent University, completing my Registered Nursing BScN.
Working in Health care has been my goal for many years. I have been drawn into Mental Health and Addiction. Over the years I watched the results unfold for those who “got caught in the cracks” or “left behind”. It caused me to want to be a part of something bigger and to try and help those who deem themselves unfixable.
For many years mental health was viewed as a waste of time and people went unnoticed and undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Today, however, The state of a person’s mind is being seen as a direct correlation to their quality of life. I want to be part of a team that encompasses the person as a whole and recognizes them as more than “bed 1”. My mission in the future is to create a facility where patients can feel like people instead of patients.
I strive for inclusivity and the promotion of self-worth and independence with all ailments. I see this as the utmost advocacy for my patient’s self-respect and dignity to never treat them as though they are capable of less than they can. Those in mental health must also be followed and assessed regularly regarding medications. Competence in the actions of the medications and adverse effects are of extreme importance as a preventative measure of risky outcomes.
