Identifying Conflict in an Organizational Setting

It’s time to think a little deeper about how we can identify conflict in an organizational setting. Sometimes we take the definition of conflict for granted – but what exactly is conflict at work, and how can we properly identify and understand it?

Conflict can take numerous forms. Some are more overt with conflict expressed and resolved in visible ways, while other experiences of conflict may be more subtle, difficult to detect and/or resolve.

Research shows that most workplace conflicts are hidden and happen informally. This is especially true for minority employees, who may not speak up due to power imbalances. Indigenous employees might also find it hard to voice concerns because of their values of respect and relationships. When employees face unfair conditions, they can either leave (exit) or speak up (voice).

 

With this in mind, let’s explore some examples of covert, or hidden, conflict scenarios at work now by going through the examples below:
