9 Reviewing the Lexical Sets

If you’ve been playing along at home, you’ll have learned the Lexical Set Keywords as we’ve gone through the workbook. Just in case you’re struggling to remember them, let’s review:

Chapter 3: fleece, happy, kit, comma, strut, letter, nurse, near.

Chapter 4: goose, foot, cure, trap, price, bath, mouth, palm, start.

Chapter 5: dress, square, face, goat, lot/cloth, thought, choice, north/force.

You may remember that vowels can be divided into 3 groups: Checked, Free, and Reduced Vowels. Let’s group the lexical sets based on those criteria:

Checked Free Reduced
kit fleece happy
strut nurse comma
foot near letter
trap goose
bath cure
dress price
lot/cloth mouth
palm
start
square
face
goat
thought
choice
north/force

Obviously, there are way more Free Vowels than anything else, but those comprise both Free monophthongs and both kinds of diphthongs. Let’s reorganize the Free column with those three groups, and arrange all the lexical sets from front to mid to back, starting with the mouth the most closed, and slowly opening it for each of those three zones.

Checked Free Monophongs Centering Diphthongs Falling Diphthongs Reduced
Front kit fleece near face happy
dress square price
trap mouth
bath

Mid strut nurse comma
letter

Back foot goose
lot/cloth thought
palm
