Physiotherapy Internship

During my first undergraduate degree in Sport and Physical Education with Concurrent Education at Laurentian University, I completed an internship at a Physiotherapy Clinic. During this placement, I realized I wanted to be in the healthcare field and finally built up the courage to change my education path. I have always wanted to help people but didn’t know how I wanted to go about it. During this placement, I truly enjoyed being a part of a team whose main goal was to care for people and improve their lives in whatever way possible, while also forming deep and meaningful relationships with each patient. I recognized that I wanted to help people on an even deeper level, with more intense settings and needs for relationships, which is why I chose nursing. I formed an even more extreme passion to help people. This placement was the beginning of my journey which led me to apply to nursing school here at Trent University.

Trent Nursing Acceptance Letter

I will remember the moment I received my Nursing School Acceptance email from Trent University for the rest of my life. Leaving behind the Concurrent Education program at Laurentian University, a degree I and already been working for, for 4 years, was by far one of the biggest, scariest decisions I have had to make. Being accepted into the compressed nursing program at Trent was truly exciting. From the moment I received the letter, I did not look back at this decision, and something about it all felt so right. I was finally excited to go to school again, after 4 years of being so unsure. I was excited to explore my passion for helping people through nursing and see where this education and this future career could take me. This acceptance letter was my first real feeling of that “Yes, I am doing this!! I am going to be a nurse”.

CPR Training Certificate

The CPR training certificate represents the skills learned throughout the program, but also the responsibilities that will come along with being a nurse both in the healthcare setting and the community setting. I have completed the CPR course one time in the past for my previous undergraduate program, but never really took the skills exactly to heart as at the time I was not planning on going into the healthcare field – where the skills are most often used. This time, however, during the course, I had the realization that I will have to perform these skills in the future as I am going to be a nurse. Because of this, taking the CPR course felt completely different, as this time it seriously applied to my future profession; which was both exciting and a little scary. The CPR certificate represents the skills I learned throughout the training, skills that I am now going to be applying throughout my future career as a nurse.

“Better Health”: Older Adults Movement Program Instructor

While completing my undergraduate degree internship at the Physiotherapy Clinic in Sudbury, I also worked at the clinic as an instructor for the “Better Health” older adults movement program. The adults apart of this program were interested in bettering their own strength and abilities to help them throughout the aging process. We worked on strength training, balance and core exercises, as well as activities such as getting down to the floor and back up again in case of falls. This program allowed me to better my leadership skills, while also helping individuals and forming connections with each adult. Leadership skills and the ability to form connections with patients are extremely important within the nursing program to make your patient confident in your advocacy abilities as well as comfortable in your care. This was truly such a rewarding experience, and the impacts I had and the relationships I made with each person I will forever remember. Leadership skills, relationship building, as well as having a passion for helping people were all portrayed throughout this experience, and I believe also carry over and are just as important for my future nursing career.

Graduating from Laurentian University

Going to school and graduating from Laurentian University, with a degree in Sport and Physical Education was a great experience that believe helped shape me into who I am today. I was able to meet so many impactful people and build so many relationships while learning so many new things throughout my studies and about myself through the process. My hard work through that degree is what allowed me to be able to further my education here in the compressed nursing stream at Trent University. Without those experiences at my previous school, I may not have discovered my true passion for helping people and may not be following through on this newfound dream of mine to become a nurse.
