Warm-Up: Thinking about Land

Land is spiritual, emotional, and relational; Land is experiential, Land is conscious – Land is a fundamental living being.

Sandra Styres

Take some time away from your computer to connect with your surroundings. Sometimes it is easy to forget the effect that the land we live on has on our daily lives and identity. It can be easy to become consumed with your work, school, and personal life, without stopping to reflect on the meaning of place and land, and it’s impact on our identity.

Follow these steps in order to help situate yourself in this training, and to reflect on your land and the impact that it has.

Thinking About Land

Find a natural setting outdoors where you can sit quietly for about 20 minutes and just be with the Land. Open your five sense to all that is around you. Some optional questions to help guide your experience are:

  • What do you see?
  • What do you hear?
  • What do you smell?
  • What do you touch?
  • What do you taste?
  • What relationships or interactions do you notice in the environment around you?
  • How do you feel?

If you wish to, you can take notes on your observations about this experience.

We are committed to each other and to our community. Move on to learn how we can make an impact together.
