1 Module 1: Introduction

Technoableism is a term that describes the ways in which technological design and implementation can perpetuate ableist attitudes, assumptions, and inequalities. It combines “technology” and “ableism,” highlighting the intersection where technology can both include and exclude people based on their abilities. In our increasingly digital world, understanding and addressing technoableism is crucial for ensuring that technology benefits everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.

Significance:

Access and Usability: Technoableism shapes who can access, use, and benefit from technology. When technology is designed with a narrow user base in mind, it can marginalize and exclude those who do not fit this mold.

Perpetuation of Norms: It perpetuates societal norms that prioritize certain types of bodies and abilities, reinforcing the idea that being able-bodied is the default or desired state.

Inclusivity and Equity: Addressing technoableism is essential for creating inclusive, equitable technologies that serve diverse populations. By recognizing and mitigating technoableist biases, we can build technologies that are accessible to everyone, promoting social justice and equality.

Why This Course Matters:
In today’s tech-driven society, the impact of technoableism can be profound. Technologies like websites, mobile apps, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence systems can either bridge gaps or widen them, depending on how inclusively they are designed. Professionals in the tech industry, educators, policymakers, and advocates all play a critical role in recognizing and combating technoableism.
