Google’s re:Work
The training program, inspired by Google’s re:Work initiative began as a series of workshops aimed at unraveling the complex tapestry of preconceived notions that influenced hiring and promotion decisions. These workshops leveraged the psychological landscape of employees, guiding them through scenarios that unearthed subconscious biases. As acknowledged by the CEO, the sessions were far from comfortable; they required vulnerability and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. Yet, the engagement was profound, prompting a ripple effect throughout the company, reshaping policies and promoting meaningful conversations.
InclusiTech
In an effort to broaden the horizons of inclusivity, InclusiTech instituted employee-led roundtables. These safe spaces permitted individuals from various backgrounds to share experiences and offer insights into the unique challenges that marginalized employees faced. This approach mirrored the philosophies espoused in Stanford Social Innovation Review’s article on fostering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, emphasizing the value of employee perspectives in cultivating a more inclusive culture.
To move beyond mere awareness and affect tangible change, InclusiTech reframed its recruitment strategy. The company partnered with historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and women’s tech associations to seek out talent that had been traditionally overlooked. They followed the guidance provided by Harvard Business Review which demonstrated the effectiveness of expanding recruiting efforts to attract a broader set of candidates.
InclusiTech’s story is one of proactive reformation—a will to reconstruct its DNA to encapsulate the ethos of inclusivity. Among its novel programs was an advancement track tailored for underrepresented minorities (URMs) within the firm; an effort to counteract the “leaky pipeline” phenomenon—a term Constanza-Chock (2020) used to describe the attrition of URMs as they climb the corporate ladder. The program provided mentorship opportunities and tailored resources to empower URMs in their career progression within the company.
