The continent of Illyreon is surrounded by a vast ocean, as a result of this, the main city is landlocked, not that any of its residents would want to venture off of land anyway. A large percentage of Illyreon fear the unknown depths of the ocean and what is rumoured to lurk in them (see Magic). After the disaster at the Sanguine peninsula 304 years ago, known as the Ruin, the masses moved inland to escape and began the process of building the new capital of Illyreon, The Hub.

The Hub is the only advanced city of Illyreon and exists in the centre of the continent surrounded by The Suns' Sentinel mountain range and six well-established farming settlements. The farmland and The Hub are considered to be the only established and valued areas of the continent in the eyes of the economy. The vast forests and coasts are largely unexplored as their hostility and distance from The Hub renders them unattainable areas for development.
The environment outside of The Hub is still fairly hostile. Monsters and wild animals inhabit the forests, mountains, and farmland of the continent and make life outside of The Hub difficult (see Non-Human). The forests are inhabited by small game animals like turkeys and fletters as well as monsters which can be hunted depending on the species. Some monsters are considered only hostile and not consumable to people while others are hunted for their pelts or meat to later be used in trade.
The people of Illyreon give a lot of credit to the mountain range for sheltering them in their time of need. After the attack on the capital, the only choice was to move inland to unexplored territory and hope for shelter. After days of tireless travel they happened upon a mountain range which they would later name in honour of their suns. While the basin inside the circular mountain range is not the ideal climate for farming resources, it provided the people the protection and security that they were seeking from the water monsters.
While the people of The Hub were aware of the existence of monsters on land, the water monsters were unknown to them until the Ruin. They had a change in their views of the monsters after the Ruin and the later establishment of the Council that same year displayed such. The people realized that they needed to establish some sort of defensive force in order to protect against further monster attacks in the future. Despite the ranking classification system of monsters, displaying the danger of each, (see Non-human) the sea monsters are the only ones the people actually view as malicious and a threat to their civilization. The rest of the monsters are able to be lived with either civilly or not, without much issue besides the occasional flock loss. In the view of the people, all monsters are neither good nor bad besides the sea monsters.
