6 Agriculture and Trade

Located in the centre of the continent, the arid city known as The Hub acts as the central hub of trade on Illyreon. Within the city, stalls and shops dot the market district with residents and outsiders alike selling and trading their wares. Due to the lack of rivers, mines, and farmland within the city, The Hub is reliant on the outside of its surrounding mountain, The Suns' Sentinel, for farming and rare goods. What little farming that is done by The Hub is done outside of the city’s perimeter by the middle- and lower-classes. Despite being looked down on by the upper-class and the Council, the majority of Illyreon’s farming is performed by those who live outside of The Hub.

The farm land near The Suns’ Sentinel consists mainly of hardy vegetables.

Due to the topography close to The Hub’s mountain range being ill-suited for most farming, crops consist mainly of hardy vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and squash. A common sight for anyone riding out of the city on one of the many trains are the fields of blue corn and the various wheat farms that line the train tracks. Going further out from The Hub, the land becomes more suitable for more varieties of crops, including the many scores of apple trees that surround the continent’s shallow lakes. Farms of livestock consisting of horses, chickens, cows, sheep, and goats are scattered about the lands, becoming more prominent the further out one travels. The horses are exclusively used for travel assistance (be it horseback or carriage) or kept as pets, the others are raised for their meat, with cows additionally being used as a source for milk, chickens for eggs, and sheep for wool. These products are then traded or sold between villages or within The Hub to its residents, who can also procure these goods by travelling to the villages themselves. As The Hub’s currency is not often used outside of the city, outsiders prefer to trade instead of selling their goods.

Goats are considered quite lucrative as monsters have a tendency to target them. Due to the struggle and danger in keeping them protected, they fetch a higher price that is not uncommon to be out of reach for those of lesser status, while the upper echelons freely enjoy the spoils.

While not found on farms, turkeys and rabbit-like creatures called fletters are the game of choice for any hunter looking for animals not to be used for food. Those daring enough–usually the more experienced or those aspiring to greatness–will often try their hands at hunting the monsters that roam the land; these hunters have been designated “monster hunters,” and are almost exclusively employed by the Council or a member of the upper-class looking for safety or their next showpiece. Sea life is not hunted or traded due to the generational trauma from the events of the Ruin (see History) and fears what else might lurk beneath the water, be it monster or something else.

Monsters (see Non-Human) ranked II on Illyreon’s danger scale are the most commonly hunted monsters with their abundance and moderately equal risk-to-reward ratio. Queaklums and the Rank I Street Lurkers tend to fetch a higher price due to their association as pets throughout Illyeron. The Rank II monster variant of the fletters, the Horned Fletter, tend to go for lower prices within The Hub, where they are a common dish among the middle-class. Being the smallest and least dangerous monsters, the Rank I Mist Wyrms and Street Lurkers are favoured among new hunters or those looking for enlightenment due to the Mist Wyrms hallucinogenic side effects when consumed.

For those with more experience or looking to test their strength, the Rank III monsters, known for their pillaging of crops and livestock, provide a decent challenge to takedown and fetch the highest prices among the common folk.

For the Rank IV monsters, the Moon Stalkers, only the most foolish of hunters poach their eyes, a disrespectful act in Illyeron culture; though as a result, they fetch a high price on the black market.

Many outsiders who do not live as farmers or hunters find jobs in woodworking, blacksmithing, and labour. These products and services are also traded with residents of other villages or within The Hub. Many residents (particularly the upper-class) enjoy procuring the luxury goods brought into The Hub by the outsiders with wares ranging from cloth and tapestries, wood-carved and metal-based trinkets, and the works of the carpenters and blacksmiths. While trinkets and clothes are favoured among the working class, swords, canes, and art are the favourites among the Council. Some individuals even offer their services within the market district itself, though many of the upper-class prefer to do business outside of The Hub for fear of being judged.

A former common occupation of choice for the lower-class was working in the mines both outside and within The Suns’ Sentinel mountain. Due to the deposits of illyryite growing scarce, mining within the Sentinel has been put on hold. This hold on the major mines has resulted in the crystals from the outside mines to go up in price, leading to an increase in earnings—and competition—for the self-employed and those employed by The Hub alike. Self-employed miners can often be found on weekends selling various gems and accessories in the market district.

While the villages rely on wells tapped into aquifers or manually collecting water from lakes to provide water, aqueducts that connect into the lakes surrounding The Hub bring water into the city. These aqueducts feed into the various water centres found throughout the city for the lower- and middle-class residents. The upper-class homes have pipes installed to tap directly into the aqueducts, as do the homes of the middle-class who can afford it.
