Magic on the mainland continent of Illyreon used to be widespread, used often within everyday life for anyone who had the capacity to learn it. Natural Magic was a trait both passed down through lineage, but also learned by those who had the right skill sets. It surrounded the natural world, drawing power from the creatures and living things of the world around them. The original capital of the continent was on the coast, a beautiful, thriving city created with the use of magic. It was common knowledge that the people’s magic was attractive to the monsters, big and small, that call Illyreon home; however, they did not know what monsters lurked in the ocean’s depths. Because of this, it was a shocking surprise when out of the ocean, monsters they had never seen before took to the land and attacked the city (see History). This destruction, and the fact that Magic was its cause, led the self-appointed Council to outlaw Natural Magic and any education regarding the subject.

Due to Natural Magic being outlawed on the mainland continent, magic users are few and far between. However, the outside islands are assumed to have a large population of magic users as they have been used as exile locations since the laws were first created. The only source of Natural Magic that has stayed within the mainland is the illyryite used to power much of the technology, including banking and transit (see Technology Influence). Illyryite alone is clear, but turns purple when charged. These crystals are mined from within the mountains surrounding The Hub, and have to be charged prior to use by a select few people permitted to use magic for this sole purpose. These people are chosen by the Council, and kept secret to the general public so that the idea of magic will hopefully die out. Much trial and error was done to learn how illyryite can be used, and when it was found, there was much debate on how they were to be used. Furthermore, the people that are kept to power the illyryite are not totally free, however it is not slave labour as they are paid well and given safe places to live. These people were found due to being arrested for using magic, and given the option of either exile to the islands or to work through crystal powering. They live and work in a complex within the mountains, far enough away from The Hub to prevent monsters from being attracted. There are still some people left who practice Natural Magic freely on the mainland, but they have to keep as hidden as possible to prevent their own exile. Some Natural Magic users were able to escape exile, coming back to the mainland from the islands, who now hide among the humans of the mainland, also known as The Forgotten (see Non-Human).
