8 Non-Human

The people of Illyreon throughout many years have created a way to rank all of the different types of monsters to better communicate the danger of each. The rankings are from I–V, I being the least aggressive towards humans and V being a natural disaster level of threat to encounter. The rest of the monsters fit into the rankings of II, III, and IV. Rankings I and II are reserved for prey-type monsters.

The monsters of Illyreon are strange creatures whose features and habits reflect the world and environments they inhabit. The Rank I monsters are the Mist Wyrms and Street Lurkers. Lurkers are edible but not very widely eaten as their size makes them mostly pointless to consume. Myst Wyrms are not eaten for nourishment as they have hallucinogenic and sometimes deadly properties. The Wyrms may be consumed recreationally but this isn’t a recommended activity.

The monsters included in Rank II are the Queaklum and Horned Fletter. These monsters are more widely eaten as they aren’t wildly aggressive and are larger than the Rank I monsters. Queaklums and Street Lurkers are a popular pet amongst the people. While Horned Fletters are considered monsters, their farmed hornless counterparts are not.

Rank III monsters include the A’Hoole and the Gorgashmortz who are more territorial and predatory. These monsters guard their homes and poach livestock and crops from the farming villages. All Rank III monsters can be eaten but hunting them can be a struggle for those who aren’t properly equipped with modern weapons or traps.

Rank IV has only one known monster, a species the locals call the Moon Stalkers, or sometimes The Grandfathers. These gentle creatures are revered by the people of Illyreon and thought of as wise protectors of the land (see Arts and Culture). The Moon Stalkers are poached for their eyes, the only edible part of the animal. The poaching and consumption of Moon Stalker eyes is wildly frowned upon.

Rank V, the highest ranking, is reserved for the hostile and terroristic water monsters. These water monsters received this ranking due to their destruction of the ancient ruins of the old capital on the Sanguine peninsula. The water monsters are considered corrupt creatures and viewed as evil world-ending beings by the people of the continent. Water monsters are the whole reason the people of Illyreon have an intergenerational fear of the water. If any other monsters fit into the Rank V category they are unknown, and their edibility is unknown.

In the past, it is known that members of Illyreon civilization have been exiled to the islands for using Natural Magic (see Magic). Unbeknownst to the people of the continent, this subclass of original humans known as “The Forgotten” are thriving on the islands and creating civilizations of their own. They embrace the old ways of natural magic and because of this the islands have not advanced like the mainland has in terms of technology. Something changed in these individuals when they were exiled and they retained less of their humanity than the people on the mainland, beginning to resemble the monsters in behaviour. The more that the forgotten use their Natural Magic, the more they resemble the traits of the monsters they share land with. The people of the mainland do not know of their existence, and as a result of this, they are oblivious to the fact that there are individuals on the mainland masquerading as residents.
