If you were to close your eyes and explain the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “muscles,” I am sure a variety of things might pop into your head. It may be the image of a large bodybuilder stepping on stage and presenting their physique in front of a crowd of spectators and a few judges, maybe it is an image of Arnold Schwarzenegger flexing his biceps on a beach in the 1970s, or maybe it is something similar to the photo on the right. While these are all exemplifications of “muscles”, there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to the muscular system.

In this chapter, we will examine the definitions, structures, and concepts associated with muscles, in particular skeletal muscle (more on that to come). We also investigate muscular anatomy and the naming, identification, and action(s) of musculature throughout the human body.
