Experiential Learning Requirements
Experiential Learning “supports students in gaining hands-on learning that helps them transition to employment”[1]. Experiential Learning can take the form of co-operative education, degree work placement, clinical/field placement, fieldwork/simulation labs, capstone/applied research projects, and service learning.
HESM program has two placements. The first placement is scheduled for the fall 3rd semester. Students are placed in a healthcare setting to job shadow frontline Environmental services (EVS) staff to learn the roles and responsibilities of each position, two days per week for 7 weeks. The second placement is scheduled at the end of the 4th semester for 3 days per week for seven weeks to job shadow EVS management team. Placement sites are arranged by our department placement officer based on availability, current affiliation agreement and geographically.
Placement Partners
The Healthcare Environmental Services Management program has established field placement partnerships with organizations including: Sienna Senior Living, Bridgepoint Health Centre, Shepherd Village, University Health Network (UHN), Oak Valley Health’s Markham Stouffville Hospital, North York General, Belmont House and City of Toronto.
The status of clinical/field placements and co-op work terms will be subject to public health directives and the reopening plan. Students may complete their placement requirements at sites that are permitted to open, either onsite, following appropriate health and safety protocols, or remotely. Students will be asked to read and sign a Student Informed Consent form in order to ensure that they understand their rights and the potential health and safety risks. Similarly, employers and/or placement hosts will be required to complete an Employer/Placement Health and Safety Site Checklist.
Statement indicating that students must follow policies of the host site/employer which means they may have to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination even though it is not a College requirement.
