1 1.1 An Introduction to Lung Cancer and Lung Cancer Research

Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent and dangerous cancer diagnoses afflicting individuals today. Developing an understanding of how this illness affects individuals and how we can treat it is important to the research and development of new treatment plans.

In this chapter we will examine some of the basic cellular mechanisms underlying a cancer diagnosis, lung anatomy, and the symptomatology of lung cancer. Following this we will provide a brief overview of the current therapeutic treatments for lung cancer and introduce some of the research tools currently utilized to develop treatments. At the end of the chapter there will be a brief review to help you solidify your knowledge of the content. Please enjoy.
