7.3 – Emerging Treatment Options

Due to the relatively limited effect of existing AD treatment, a number of different therapies are currently being tested. New research papers similarly vary widely in their targets, from drugs that only try to treat symptoms of AD such as reactive oxygen species, to drugs that target specific receptors to try to directly deal with the memory and cognitive issues that arise due to the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. This chapter will examine a couple of these nascent therapies, with an emphasis on looking at examples of previous research to see what connections can be made about their targets and how effective they are.

In this chapter you will learn about

  • Receptor based treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease
  • The effect of mixing treatments on Cognitive Function
  • Potential future targets and drugs for treating Alzheimer’s
  • Alternative Treatment Methods
