Values

Close up on team of health workersIntegrity: I consider integrity to be a very important value in nursing. Having integrity means having strong moral principles and always doing the right thing in any situation. We want to show our patients and colleges how trustworthy and reliable we are with our integrity. This includes having a strong work ethic. Always doing my best and striving to achieve high quality care to each patient. I always stand up for what I believe in, it is important to be honest with myself and to have open and honest communication within the workplace.

Advocacy: is speaking for people who cannot speak for themselves or acting to ensure that their views are heard. Nurses may need to advocate for their patients, families, and even their communities. It is very important to gain consent before advocating on behalf of another person. At times patients are treated unfairly and offered unjust treatments, so as nurses we can provide support and protection while standing up for their patients. Nurses can act as a moderator between the doctors and patients and assist the patient when receiving inaccurate diagnosis or care. Nurses can also advocate for families. Often times family members make unfavourable decisions, nurses must stand up for the patients in those situations.

Accountably: is an essential skill when each individual sure is responsible for their individual action and choices when providing patients with care. Nurses are accountable for advocating, promoting, and providing the best care possible for their clients. Accountability is an ethical notion related to relationships where we demonstrate loyalty, duty, promise keeping, and honesty. Some examples of accountability at my workplace would be showing up on time ready for work, helping a co-worker in need, or being mindful of the rules and regulations at work. This shows that you are respectful and you value your work ethic. Being Accountable benefits everyone because it brings colleges together in a positive manner and builds better relationships.

It is important to show empathy when a patient may be feeling sad, lonely, or angry. Providing kindness as well as comfort to patients is a form of compassion. Building trust shows each individual that you care for them in their time of need. Listening to others is a form of compassion that allows for patients to express their feelings and offers support especially during difficult times. Always putting the patients needs first whether it may be mentally, emotionally, or physically. Having compassion truly connects the patient to their caregiver and forms a very special bond. I look forward to building these connections, showing compassion, and building bonds with patients throughout my nursing journey.
