My Nursing Philosophy

I am currently a student who is enrolled in the Trent/Fleming collaborative nursing program. Going into high school I had already known what my future will entail because I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse. Previously, I had volunteered at the Ross Memorial Hospital in my hometown for a few months to get as much experience as possible in a health care setting before I headed to university. Working at the hospital brought me an immense amount of joy knowing I was positively impacting others lives.

I believe my nursing philosophy revolves around keeping a patient-centred approach which I can implement by having effective communication to ensure the patient is receiving optimal care. Taking a patient-centred approach as a nurse means to share your own expertise as a trained professional as well as being mindful of the patients values and beliefs by supporting their ideas. It is important to me to create an environment where each individual patient is able to openly communicate their opinions. Furthermore, I value taking a holistic approach to nursing that emphasizes caring for a patient as a whole person. The patients we see in hospitals or clinical settings are human beings like anyone else and deserve to be treated with that same approach you would have if you were to care for a family member. During my time volunteering at the Ross Memorial Hospital I was able to take a holistic patient-centred approach when helping nurses with patient related tasks.
