My Top 4 Values
Nursing as a profession has taught me the importance of establishing values. These values are what guide me in decision making during nursing practice and everyday life. My primary values include being true to yourself and others, showing respect to others, having the courage to take action in difficult situations, and taking selfless actions.
1. Honesty:
Being both truthful and faithful is my core value because I believe being trust worthy is the best quality a person can have. Integrity is a key aspect of the nursing profession because it is the responsibility of maintaining both trust and credibility. Being honest is a crucial part of nursing because it makes you a reliable source which is required to ensure patient safety.
2. Respect:
Respecting others by being well mannered is something I value because it helps build relationships on strong foundations. As a nurse, in order to create an open relationship with patients or other healthcare professionals it is important that both participants show mutual respect for one another. When relationships are built off of respect people are more commonly prone to trusting each other, being attentive in discussion, and having open communication.
3. Courage:
I believe in doing what is necessary to accomplish my goals even if the steps to achievement are difficult to act on. As a volunteer I had patients ask me questions every shift which had given me anxiety because half the time I was unable to provide them with a reliable answer but I asked questions to find answers myself and continued to volunteer irregardless because in order to learn you must put yourself into uncomfortable situations.
4. Altruism:
As a nurse, I value altruism because I believe a patients needs take priority over one’s own. Altruism is an act of selflessness and a key aspect of nursing. A nurse must be able to put aside any personal barriers that may infringe on providing their patients with optimal care. I believe altruism in a healthcare setting is the main difference between “caring” and “care”. “Care” is providing surface level care where as “caring” is providing in depth care to patients.
2 SMART Goals
- My first goal is to become a better public speaker because it will make me a better fit for leadership rolls in nursing practice. I will track this goal by contributing to conversation in seminar and lab discussion at least once each class. I can support my goal by keeping a log of how many times I participated each day. I believe the social anxiety I have will decrease with each contribution because the more I get used to putting myself on the spot the easier it will get. By the end of the winter term, my goal is to reach 75 times I participated in class discussion. I chose this goal because I know it will be incredibly beneficial in the future when I need strong leadership skills.
- My second goal is to start going over lecture content before I attend the class to promote learning. I have friends who use this method that find it extremely beneficial for developing a better understanding of the content. To support this goal I will keep daily reminders as well as a log to keep track of my commitment to this method of learning. By the end of the winter term, my goal is to have looked over at least 2/3 of the lectures before attending class. I made my goal to look over two-thirds of the lectures instead of all of them because I know time management can be a concern, making it unrealistic to look over each lecture.
